Down In Mississippi

Posted by: wrightc8 on: October 4, 2009

Although I was reluctant to see this play, it was really good.  I enjoyed the story line and the information that was brought forth.  A part that really stood out to me was the “personal training Jimmy had to receive”.  Hearing how the white people treated blacks really made me feel privileged to live in a place and time where the color of my skin isn’t a determining factor.  I have friends who are both black and white and was raised in a predominately white community, where the color of my skin was never an issue to anyone.

Questions I would like to bring to the table include:

  • Why do black feel that it’s okay to use the “N-word”? Personally I hate the word because I understand the hate and discrimination that was behind it.  Why would you refer to yourself that way knowing the history behind it?  White people don’t call each other crackers, and hispanics don’t call themselves spics.
  • I found it was interesting that Ellen lied about ever being able to love a Negro.  Is it because she didn’t want to betray her “whiteness”?
