I really enjoyed reading “Guerilla Art Kit”. I think self expression is very important and I enjoyed reading about people expressing themselves in a positive way. I have never heard the term “guerilla art”, but the author explained it very effectively. Although I am not the best artist, I do enjoy seeing all the artwork on buildings, sidewalks, and walls as I walk through different cities. It is unfortunate that these drawings are illegal because it is creative expression. It is beautiful, and isn’t harming anyone. I really thought a lot about the list on page 291:
1. beautifying – altering your surroundings
2. questioning – using your voice, challenging the status quo
3. interacting – with the environment or people
while reading this small excerpt I thought the ideas were dead on. Beauty to me, is finding a special or specific trait within something, and altering your surroundings does just that. I like the idea of challenging the status quo – being different and going against the grain. Lastly the idea of art as an interaction with others and the environment is exactly what art does. It adds to the environment, brings life to it and gives people something to think about. My favorite work of art within the reading is on page 299, entitled “Little Notices”. I am actually considering posting signs like that around my dorm. It gives you a chance to notice the little things in life, that you never truly pay attention to, which we often don’t appreciate.
